Connection Troubleshooting

Introduction

There are two connections GhostSurf must maintain to work properly: the connection between itself and the Internet (so it can send and receive information) and the connection between itself and your web browser (so it intercepts all queries, and sends the responses back to the browser as it should). If either or both of these connections is not working, you should refer to the following sections for help. If you cannot resolve your problem or are simply generally confused, we will be more than happy to assist you personally; you can visit the Tenebril Customer Services page for more information.

Connecting your browser

If you've run the browser test (that is, opened your browser and visited a web page) but the wizard didn't say "Status: success," you may wish to check the following things. First, if you're using Internet Explorer, it may not have accepted GhostSurf's settings yet. Make sure you open up a fresh copy of Internet Explorer before running the test. Second, no matter what browser you're using, make sure its proxy settings point to GhostSurf. Your browser should be set to use a proxy, and the proxy it uses should be "127.0.0.1", port 7212. You can learn more about setting your proxy for Netscape here and Opera here. For Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu; choose "Internet Options;" and in the window that appears, click on the "Connections" tab. Double-click on the dial-up connection you're using (if any); the "Proxy server" box will show what you need. After that, click on the "LAN Settings..." button, also in the Connections page. Make sure its proxy settings are also correct.

If your proxy settings are not correct, another program may be changing them (just like GhostSurf does for Internet Explorer). In this case, you may either want to allow that program to change them and force it to connect to GhostSurf (see "allow proxy chaining" in the Options window for more information, and then set your other program to connect to GhostSurf instead of the Internet); or you may want to tell that program to stop automatically changing your browser's settings. You'll have to refer to the program's documentation for more information.

If you're stuck and need personal assistance, please refer to the Tenebril Customer Services page for help.

Connecting to the Internet

If you've run the second test ("Connect to the Internet") and it's failed, you will need to make sure GhostSurf has access to the Internet. First, make sure your Internet connection is active and functioning properly. Second, make sure any personal firewalls you run will allow GhostSurf to connect; you can read the firewalls article for more information. Third, make sure you've entered your proxy information properly on the preceding page; if you're using a proxy, this information must be entered into GhostSurf. Finally, if you still can't get GhostSurf to connect to the Internet, please visit Tenebril Customer Services page for help.
